Ministry of Music

Come make a joyful noise unto the Lord

Music is one of the most splendid gifts from the Lord. We believe that is it a divine language with a divine purpose and a powerful tool by which to know, glorify, and enjoy God and minister to others. Music offers an exciting and fulfilling opportunity for ALL to serve. Our purpose is to glorify God (Psalm 33:3), our mission is to edify each other in the body of Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:11), and our vision is to multiply God’s kingdom (Matthew 28: 19-20).

Song is a response which engages the whole self in prayer. Song unites the faithful in common prayer wherever they gather for worship whether in church, home, or other special places. The covenant people have always used the gift of song to offer prayer. Psalms were created to be sung by the faithful as their response to God.

To lead the congregation in the singing of song/prayer is a primary role of the choir and other musicians. They also may sing/pray on behalf of the congregation through introits, responses, and other musical forms. Instrumental music may be a form of song/prayer since words are not essential to prayer. In worship, music is not an entertainment or artistic display, nor is music a cover for silence. Music as prayer is to be a worthy offering to God on behalf of the people.

Musical Activities of Note:

Men’s Ensemble – Sunday 8:45 – 9:15AM

A group of men meet each Sunday at 8:45am for practice and fellowship.  They work on a varied array of music for 4-part harmony.  They participate in worship throughout the year. For a great time of fellowship, fun and singing, come join us! New members always welcome.

ReSounding Praise Bell Choir – Tuesday 6:30 – 7:15PM

Adult choir room -This is an intergenerational choir and we would love to have you join us. Mother/daughter; husband/wife; father/son. ALL are welcome. We ring the bells different times of the year and the bells are also used along with the organ and choir.

Children’s Choir – Wednesday 5:15 – 5:45PM

Children’s choir room – Children are indeed a gift from God and they bring special gifts to worship and grow in their faith through their regular inclusion and participation in the worship of the congregation. In our children’s choir our children will be learning songs that can be used in worship. They will be playing drums, rhythm instruments, Orff instruments, learning to follow music, learning about rhythm, and learning about being part of the church’s musical family. What a worthy calling to give children this life-long gift; to teach them the language of worship; and to encourage them to experience the glory of the Lord through their voices and talents. If you are interested in your child being part of the Children’s Choir, please fill out the registration form and return it to charlene@stgilespres.org

Chancel Choir – Each Wednesday 7:15 PM – 8:30 PM

We have the Chancel choir and we invite our youth to participate. You do not have to audition – you just need to be able to sing and have a willingness to participate and be at practice. A number of our youth play musical instruments and they add to our worship service.

Special Guest Musicians

During the years we have had special guests, like the Presbyterian College Choir and Bell Choir, iPan Band from Limestone College, Jazz Ensemble from Riverside High School, the Horton’s, Tony Vinskus from outside our church present special music. Please check our web site for information about special events or groups that will be part of our worship service.

Instrumentals

We are blessed at St. Giles with a wide array of instruments and willing individuals that play for our worship services. Occasionally during worship, additional vocalists and instrumentalists are used to enhance the worship experience, either in a solo/ensemble arrangement or accompanying the choir. If you play an instrument and would be willing to participate, please let me know.

Do you sing or play an instrument and are not involved in the music ministry? Or for more information about our music program contact Charlene Means at charlene@stgilespres.org to get involved in worship at St. Giles Presbyterian.

Art/Music Camp

Occurs during the summer, usually July. Lasts for one week, where children K-5 through fifth grade come to have fun with crafts and music. Mrs. Caroline Welsh is an awesome art leader and she always has beautiful crafts for the children to create. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please check our website for further info after the first of the year.

Pre-school Music

St. Giles has a phenomenal pre-school program and every other week the three and four year olds come to the children’s choir room where they have thirty minutes of music. We play drums, Orff instruments, rhythm instruments, bells and sing songs. The pre-school children participate in our Children’s Sabbath worship service in November.

Charlene MeansWe strive to worship and glorify God in ways that are biblical, reformed and culturally relevant. May we lift our voices in praise to the One who unites, loves, and saves us.

“Lord, we lift Your name on High”

That is the essence of music ministry at St. Giles. People, young and old, singing and playing instruments to the glory of God and enjoying the shared calling of leading God’s people in worship and joyful fellowship.

“God inhabits the praises of His People” and truly knowing God is our ultimate goal. God alone is our audience.

St Giles offers a wide variety of musical opportunities for children, youth and adults. We have the Chancel choir, ReSounding Praise bell choir for adults and youth, children’s choir, instrumentalists and a men’s ensemble. We are always happy to welcome new participants to the music program. If interested please contact Charlene Means at charlene@stgilespres.org or call 864-244-4887 ext. 13. There is always room!
