St. Giles Presbyterian Church has an active Youth Ministry for teens in 6th-12th grades. Youth groups grow together when they worship, learn, serve, and play together. That happens every Sunday evening at youth group. It also happens — and in a powerful way! — on youth trips. Our well-chaperoned trips are not only tons of fun, but provide great opportunities for growth and service. Young people come home changed, inspired, and inspiring.

New Hopes

New Hopes (6th-8th Grades)

New Hopes is the middle school youth ministry of St. Giles. New Hopes meet weekly on Sunday Night for youth group. In addition, the group has two wonderful trips. We keep the cost of trips as low as possible, and scholarships are always available by talking confidentially with Pastor TJ or Anna Washington, our youth coordinator.

RETREAT: In the early fall our New Hopes are invited to go to Foothills Presbytery’s Middle School Youth Event at Bonclarken. This provides an introduction to retreat ministry that will serve them well when they enter high school ministry.

MISSION TRIP: In early spring, our New Hopes participate in a weekend of mission with the CROSS Ministry, a mission project of Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. This trip provides a great introduction to mission trips, which will prepare them for the weeklong missions they’ll participate in when they enter high school.

YOUTH ADVISERS: The New Hopes ministry is blessed by a team of dedicated and passionate youth advisers who are eager to build relationships, lead programming, and offer a listening ear. This year’s New Hopes advisers include Tim Ellis, Anneke Nave, and Caroline Welsh.

Joyonyas

Joyonyas (9th-12th Grades)

Joyonyas is the the high school youth ministry of St. Giles. Joyonyas meet weekly on Sunday Night for youth group. In addition to weekly youth group programming, the Joyonyas have a variety of fantastic trips. We keep the cost of trips as low as possible, and scholarships are always available by talking confidentially with Pastor TJ or Anna Washington, our youth coordinator.

RETREATS: In early spring, the youth participate in the Mini-Montreat Retreat sponsored by Foothills Presbytery. Each summer brings a highly-anticipated trip to the Montreat Youth Conference.

MISSION TRIPS: Our Joyonyas participate in a weeklong mission trip each summer, rotating through several different locations and mission opportunities. Our goal is that in the five years a youth is in high school youth ministry (from rising 9th grader through high school graduation), she/he will have had the opportunity to experience missions in Jacksonville, FL; Wilmore, KY; Mobile, AL; Washington, DC; and Tokio, ND. Going out of town for a week to do a mission reminds us in a compelling way that we are called to do mission year-round in our local community, schools, and neighborhood.

YOUTH ADVISERS: The Joyonyas ministry is blessed by a team of dedicated and passionate youth advisers who are eager to build relationships, lead programming, and offer a listening ear. This year’s Joyonyas advisers include Joe Cash, Karen Fluharty, and Randy Tyner.

What to Expect on a Typical Sunday Night

Youth groups meet most Sunday evenings during the school year from 5:00-7:30pm.

  • 5:00-6:00pm – Free time in the youth room/gym. Bring homework, or just hang out. Some shoot hoops or play ping pong, others listen to music or just talk.
  • 6:00-6:30pm – A light dinner is served in the Fellowship Hall as Middle and High School Youth and Youth Advisers break bread together in table fellowship.
  • 6:30-7:25pm – Middle Schoolers (New Hopes) & High Schoolers (Joyonyas) meet in separate groups for a program incorporating study, service, worship, and fellowship. Programs range from “game-night” to “What does the Bible say about our relationships?”
  • 7:25-7:30pm – Prayer concerns are shared (ask your youth about how we make our prayer circle!), then dismissal.
