Tonight, this Christmas Eve,
we gather with God’s people throughout the world
to celebrate the good news of great joy
which has come to us all.
Hope, peace, joy, and love.
four promises continually offered to us by God,
and all of them manifest in this one we light tonight:
the Christ candle.
In Christ we find the Hope of transformation,
the Peace that follows justice,
the Joy of fulfillment in community,
and the Love that encompasses us all.
We light the Christ candle to remind us that
the light of the world was born this night.
From Isaiah chapter 9, verses 6 and 7:
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
and the government shall be upon his shoulder.
His name shall be Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
We light the Christ candle,
praising God and proclaiming God’s peace on earth.
Let us pray:
Good and gracious God,
on this holy night you gave us your Son,
the Lord of the universe,
wrapped in swaddling clothes,
the Savior lying in a manger.
On this holy night draw us into your love.
May the light of your life be kindled in us,
and lead us to the shining truth,
of God with us, God for us, God in us.
